Self-Entitled Elite Register Opening Win

An entertaining game was unfortunately marred by two accidental but serious injuries requiring hospital attention. A Combe Down player suffered a nasty broken ankle injury whilst in a separate incident Avon's Ollie Harding Wyatt broke his elbow.
The game had given an opportunity for Avon's older and fringe players to have a run out for the first time this season and they were grateful for Combe Down in raising a veterans team to fulfill the fixture. Both sets of players knew each other over the years and interestingly Combe Down featured several of their club stalwarts who had previously also played for Avon earlier in their careers eg Stuart Flint, Paul Lunt, Jamie Knight and Luke Cox.
It's fair to say that they also put a decent amount of money over the Avon bar as they enjoyed the hospitality whilst watching the England match on the big screen in the clubhouse and reminiscing afterwards!
On the scoring charts for Avon, the star of the show was winger Alex Jackman who used his pace to good effect with a hat-trick of tries. Mark Carpenter also added a try whilst skipper Ben Hurd weighed in with his customary score. Paul Bates slotted a conversion.
Combe Down scored two good tries in response with one converted.
With difficulties obtaining a referee, Avon were grateful when one of their players Lister Metcalfe stepped in to fill the void.
It was good to see some of the old Avon players make an appearance including stalwarts such as Damien Sawyer, Mark Kelly, Chaz Meddick, Dan and Adie Mutlow and Dave Rutter amongst others.
Special mention must also be made of Jordan Bishop whose tackle rate and turnover count was inspirational.
