Clive Book our Director of Rugby reports..........
Once again this season, it was the Avon backs dominating the scorecard with winger Iain Parris keeping up his try a game record with 2 excellent finishes and centres Escher Le Duc and Ollie Flight picking up one apiece.
The foundation for the win against the newly promoted South Somerset side was laid in the first half as the Avon forwards, with Dan Cater making an impressive debut, provided plenty of possession for the backs with playmaker Tom Boreham at fly half pulling the strings. It was Boreham who, after a strong forward drive, picked out Le Duc in mid field with a sharp miss pass after 5 mins to split the home defence and allow the centre to coast in from 20m out. Tai Harwood added the extras.
Avon dominated the first 20 minutes without ever really hitting top gear and when they stretched the Crewkerne defence to breaking point, try-magnet Parris in the unfamiliar full back role finished well wide on the left to extend the visitors lead.
Crewkerne have only lost at home twice in the last 3 years and did not let Avon have things all their own way. Playing up the slope, they kept the ball tight and had Avon under pressure for most of the later part of the first half. The visitors defence however was well disciplined with Will Hayward, Damian Sawyer and Boreham particularly effective in defence.
Having weathered the storm, Avon worked their way back down the field and following 8 phases of constant pressure, Ollie Flight sniped from the base on a ruck and broke away to make it 0-19 at half time, with Harwood again slotting the conversion.
Avon had most of the possession during the second half but could not maintain any continuity and were forced into playing off slow ball most of the time. Chaz Meddick came off the bench with 20 mins to go and produced some big driving runs along with some crunching tackles.
Then with a bit more forward momentum, Avon scored the try of the match. Starting with a lineout on their 22, they broke through midfield and, having won 3 quick rucks in succession, moved the ball right to find back row Dan Griffin who sucked in 3 defenders before offloading magically behind his back to the supporting Parris who sprinted in for the bonus point try.
Crewkerne had the last say and scored a well-deserved try with the last play of the game following a series of driving plays. Although Head Coach Kai Harwood would have liked to see more consistency from his side, he was more that happy with the bonus point win at what could have been a potential banana skin fixture.
Next week, Avon entertain Yatton at home at Hicks Field in Somerset Premier.
