1 Win, 1 Loss, But A Great Afternoon & Evening

Steve Bird10 Apr 2022 - 14:41

The Avon teams had mixed results in front of a large crowd at their Old Players Reunion with the 1st team succumbing to Minehead Barbarians whilst the 2nd team overcame Frome 3rds.

In the early kick off, Avon 2nds recorded a comfortable 41-5 win against a large Frome side who enjoyed some territorial advantage but couldn’t break down a stubborn Avon defence led by Ben Crane and Scott Book. Meanwhile, the Avon attack always threatened with Rich Trott in midfield and Will Hayward on the flank posing problems throughout.

Featuring mainly veterans - epitomised by 60 year old Terry Wynes and his 35 year old son Shaun - with a couple of youngsters guesting, Avon took their chances superbly in a 7 try victory. The Avon half backs cleverly controlled the game with Damien Sawyer collecting two tries and a sylphlike Andy Mead ghosting through for another.

Skipper Ben Hurd showed his predatory try scoring instincts haven’t diminished with a trademark touch down from close range, whilst Dan Cater, Tim Wood and Will Cheddar also crossed the whitewash. Evergreen full back Paul Bates slotted 3 conversions with Frome restricted to a consolation score for their determined efforts.

The 1st team match was certainly a game of two halves. Avon made a perfect start with a well-rehearsed line out catch and drive giving Josh Hiscott the opening try, well converted by Rob Fitch.

Playing with the wind advantage, Avon were comfortably in control as Fitch exploited the blindside with a deft show-and-go to unleash Iain Parris for his 19th try of the season.

After an Avon penalty attempt dropped just under the bar, things then started to unravel as a missed tackle in midfield allowed the Barbarians to score a converted try under the posts on the stroke of half time.

Whilst Minehead undoubtedly made better use of the wind in the second half, Avon equally only had themselves to blame for some sloppy defence as the visitors utilised their roving wingers to great effect to expose gaps through midfield and out wide to add another 4 converted tries to put the result well beyond doubt.
