Despite a bright start, Avon found themselves on the defensive for much of the first half as their opponents made the most of the elements and eventually capitalised on their pressure to score an unconverted try on the left wing. Stung into action, Avon gradually worked the ball upfield and Kai Harwood sold a great dummy just inside the 22 before storming over for the equalising try. Rob Fitch added the extras in tricky kicking conditions to open a narrow lead.
Either side of half time, Avon then conceded 2 tries - the first from a pick and drive after needlessly giving away too many successive penalties, the next from a short side scrum after a poor restart to the second half. This gave Old Bristolians a ten point cushion which looked decisive in the stormy conditions.
Avon forced a series of close quarter line outs but couldn't break down the stubborn home defence. They were also guilty of trying to attack from too deep and lacked their usual fluency as it seemed that the game was slipping away.
Then they were given a glimmer of light as a stable scrum presented quick ball down the blindside for winger Ben Crane to squeeze over for a try in the corner to reduce the deficit.
With an opportunity in sight, Avon increased their intensity which forced Old Bs to concede penalties. Rob Fitch scored one to close the gap to 2 points before Avon launched one last massive drive throughout their forwards and were rewarded with a final penalty which Fitch coolly slotted between the posts to clinch a last gasp win.
Next week Avon are away to local rivals Oldfield.
