The target should have been out of reach if Avon had taken advantage of several try scoring opportunities which they created in the first half but failed to finish off. An early midfield break from man-of-the-match Chris Flavell almost led to the opening score, then concerted pressure from the Avon pack was ended as the ball was held up over the line.
Avon opened the scoring as Jonny Batchelor slotted a penalty but this was soon cancelled out as Yatton levelled the scores. Despite most of the action taking place deep inside the visitors half, Avon failed to turn the pressure into points whilst Yatton always looked dangerous on the break.
Scrum half Ollie Flight was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury with Flavell switching positions to cover and another chance was missed as a promising attacking position 5 metres from the try line was negated with a reversed penalty allowing Yatton to clear their lines.
After turning round all square, Yatton took the lead as they capitalised on a missed tackle in midfield to touch down a converted try under the posts. A single score still separated the teams as they moved into the last 15 minutes with Avon cranking up the pressure. A promising attack saw newcomer Escher Le Duc burst through midfield, then a thunderous lineout drive saw arch predator Ben Hurd emerge from the pile of bodies to claim their first try of the season and reduce the deficit. 5 minutes later, Avon repeated the tactic on the other side of the pitch for Hurd to add his second try.
This opened up a 3 point lead for Avon going into the closing minutes and suddenly Yatton forced a penalty which they kicked to corner and then gave Avon a dose of their own medicine, scoring their winning try from a line out drive.
Avon 2nds opening fixture was cancelled as scheduled opponents Combe Down withdrew at short notice. Next Saturday, Avon entertain Burnham-on-Sea at Hicks Field, kick off 3pm.
