This game however never quite reached the same heights and was over as a contest by half time. Oldfield opted to play with the strong wind on their backs in the first half and started the game brightly taking the lead after 3 mins from a Ali Lane penalty. Avon who had a wealth of experience in their pack and on the bench knew exactly what they had to do against the strengthening wind and took control of the ball and with forwards looking to carry and offload and carry spent the lion’s share of the half in possession denying Oldfield of the chance to use the elements to full effect.
It took 13 mins for the home side to take a lead they would never lose with a try from a driving maul by Xander Davis. The ever improving Scrum half Alex Gapper who put in another man of the match performance sniped from the base of a ruck for the second try, 2 mins after that the Avon front row took a strike against the head and No 8 JJ Pulvertaff burst away his offload finding skipper Scott Book in support who strolled in from 20m unchallenged. The ever reliable right boot of Johnny Bachelor added the conversion just as he did again a minute before half time after Gapper broke for the bonus point try giving the Hicksfield side a 26 3 half time lead.
Avon did not make the best use of the elements in the second half and could be accused of over playing from deep instead of using the wind to propel the ball to the corners and it took them 20 mins to score again when a sliced Oldfield kick from behind their own line went straight to Zak Harwood who having spent much of the game making the hard yards though the midfield just had to dot down for the easiest of scores.
Josh Hiscoff added another to make it 40 - 3 before Avon were reduced to 14 men when Harwood was showed a red card following what was adjudged a high tackle. Oldfield who were missing some key players due to injury to their credit never gave up made the most of the extra man and ran in two well worked late tries to bring the final score to 40 15.
