Despite the constant snowfall and bitter wind this match between the top two teams in the league proved to be highly entertaining. Avon won the toss and chose to play up the slope in the first half. The hosts had the better of the early exchanges as Avon struggled to build momentum with too many unforced error giving possession back to the home side at key moments. Wivvy open the score when to their credit they turned down a simple 3 points in front of the posts to run a tap penalty move which resulted in them crashing over under the posts for a converted try.

Throughout the game the Avon defence was outstanding as Wivvy used their big forwards to crash up time and time again only to be repelled by a defence in which Josh Harding-Wyatt was outstanding. Avon started to find their rhythm in the second quarter and were rewarded by a Batchelor penalty to put them back in touch at half time.

With the benefit of the slope in the second half Avon started to take the game to the hosts with Ian Burnell and Josh Hiscocks making big inroads into the defence and Alex Gapper snipping from scrum half. It only seemed a matter of time before Avon would score and with 10 mins to go they did just that when following a numbers of drives starting in their own half Gapper fed Rory Crowther who offloaded to fellow teenager Sam Wykes who powered through two tackles to score.

All Avon had to do now was see the game out but with 3 mins to go the ref awarded a penalty for hands in a ruck on halfway and the Wivvy fullback put it over to take the victory and extend their unbeaten home run.

Avon have another hard fixture this Saturday when they visit other promotion hopefuls Gordano. Then on Weds they will also travel to Melksham to play Corsham in the Combination cup.
