Avon hit six in local derby

Clive Book29 Oct 2011 - 20:59

Avon scored three tries in each half as they won this local derby without ever really hitting top form.

Avon eventually ran out comfortable winner in this local derby game against Stotherts without ever really hitting top gear.

Although dominate in the first period of the game Avon will be happy to forget the first 25 mins in which they throw away 5 scoring chances including knocking on over the line twice.

Stotherts who were robust in defence went down to 14 man after 10 min when Heath was sinned binned for a second offence after being warned minutes earlier by the ref for a head butt and he was soon joined by winger carter for the fashionable spear tackle offence.

It was not however until Stotherts were back to 15 that Avon got their first points with a 30 mtr penalty from Rowlands after 26 mins. Soon after man of the match Scott Book opened up the defence with a good running line and offload to second row Dilloway who barged his way over from 15 meters. Rowlands converted.

Young winger Ross Atherton added another score in the corner just after and number eight Craig Rees was rewarded for some good backing up when Atherton was put away up the blind and he won the race to his own kick ahead.  Earlier in this move the ref spotted another dangerous tackle from carter and this time had no option but to show him a red card.

Having given their poorest finishing display of the season the Avon supporters were pleased and surprised see their team go in 20 0 at half time.

14 man Stotherts defended bravely in the second half but with Avon fly half Bowden ruthlessly exploiting  the gaps  where carter would have been with his kicking They were always fighting a losing battle.

Bowden added the bonus point try after 50 mins when he weaved  through the midfield to score under the posts and Soon after prop Chris Mutlow added another before A cross kick by Bowden was followed up by Book who managed to control it with his fingertips before touching down for Avons final score.

Stotherts to their credit did not give up and with the introduction of Andrew Crocker straight from the scaffolding of an adjacent building site with 15 mins to go they Produced their best spell of the game but Avon who were down to 14 for the last 10 mins following a sin binning of their own were in no mood to give up their clean sheet and kept Stotherts out to finish up 39 0 winners.

Avon know they are going to have to by more ruthless in attack if they are going to keep up the only unbeaten record in Somerset premier have no game next week and will look forward to a well earn rest before going away to Gordano in a fortnights time.
