This result was based on a good all-round team performance where the forwards created a surfeit of decent possession and the backs looked dangerous in attack on a lovely playing surface on the wide Keynsham pitch.
After Will Bartholomew had the ball dislodged from his grasp over the try line, Avon launched another attack with the pack making the hard yards before Rob Fitch delicately kick-passed the ball into the corner where Iain Parris plucked it from the air to touch down out wide.
From the restart, intricate inter-passing created the opportunity for Rhys van den Handel to make a half break before Addy Arole scorched around the outside to score under the posts. Rob Fitch converted. A massive lineout drive then sucked in the Keynsham defence before the ball was stretched across the field, allowing Arole to score his second try.
With Sam Book and Liam Ridley offering a mix of forward drives and soft hands, Avon soon pressurised the home defence once again and Arole reignited a stalled move with a piroutte before ghosting over the line for his hat-trick. Two more conversions from Fitch gave Avon a comfortable 26 nil lead at half time.
As the second half developed, Avon impressed with a variety of offloads and excellent support lines. Eventually the coast-to-coast attacks saw Will Hayward stroll over in the corner. The next try was more pragmatic as the Avon scrum dominance was rewarded with a pushover, dotted down by Ben Hurd.
Sam Book was then the beneficiary as he snaffled a loose Keynsham line out ball to touch down in the corner as a reward for his non stop efforts. Avon’s last word was however reserved for man-of-the-match Addy Arole who dummied his way through the defence with his silky running to add his 4th try.
Two more Fitch conversions brought up the 50 for Avon but Keynsham’s perseverance eventually resulted in a consolation try shortly before the end of the match well refereed by Shaun Redmond.
Footnotes:
- Chris Mutlow's 497th appearance was questioned as his cameo off the bench only lasted 2 minutes before he pulled up with a hamstring injury sprinting down the wing for an attempted try. Why did a 41 year old prop try to do that?
- Ollie Mutlow's substitute appearance was also cut short when he was yellow carded as the unfortunate recipient after multiple team warnings
- Iain Perez allegedly scored his 50th try but was so excited he dropped the ball twice afterwards
- Skipper Kane Book sadly let the team down with his after-match attire and hopefully was suitably fined by brother Sam
- Many thanks to Jake for travelling up from Devon to play - "you can check out but you can never leave"
