Keynsham opened the scoring as they exploited a missed tackle for Will Brookes to touch down near the posts. He also added the first of his 4 conversions in an impeccable kicking display throughout the game.
Avon were their own worst enemies as every time they breached the visitors 22, mistakes or penalties allowed the opposition to clear downfield with the advantage of the swirling wind. Then a powerful burst from Zak Harwood then saw him pop up the ball to winger Jack Moore to get the Avon scoreboard ticking over. This was followed shortly after as Will Bartholomew produced a stunning 40 metre break before feeding Iain Parris to touch down in the corner. Rob Fitch converted.
When Avon failed to deal cleanly with the restart, Keynsham took immediate advantage with their second converted try. Although losing 2nd row Adam Hinchcliff-Walz to a shoulder injury. Avon bounced back to take a 17 – 14 half time lead as Parris sidestepped his opponent to add his second try in the opposite corner. Perhaps mindful of his stag night afterwards, Parris stopped scoring then to avoid buying a jug!
With the elements now in their favour, Avon started to enjoy more territory and possession. After forcing Keynsham to concede successive penalties from several forward drives, the ball was swiftly transferred out to the wing for Moore to score his second try to secure the try bonus point. Then first phase line out ball from Ben May allowed Fitch to delay his pass for Matt Thresher to cut a great line from full back to score unopposed under the posts.
As the pendulum swung once again, Keynsham showed their attacking prowess to add their third converted try before launching another counterattack towards the Avon line. Good tackling kept them at bay before man-of-the-match Bartholomew turned over possession to set off on another mazy run towards halfway This was continued by Kiddie Sheikh who sprinted down the touchline before his legs gave way after the previous night's drinking session watching the Bristol game. He still managed a looped pass inside where the supporting Tai Harwood sidestepped over to complete a spectacular length of the field try.
Once again, the visitors struck back to narrow the gap to 6 points with their 4th bonus point try. The Avon pack were now increasingly dominant, illustrated with a 30 metre line out drive and threatening incursions from Ian Burnell and Stu Dilloway to suck in the Keynsham defence. This created the platform for Rob Fitch to execute a wrap-around move before arcing through to touch down the try in his farewell game after over 200 1st team matches.
There still remained time for Avon to add their 8th try as Moore completed his hat-trick from a Sheikh chip ahead, with Fitch nonchalantly drop-goaling the conversion from the touchline to score over 100 points for the season.
Next week, Avon travel to Chew Valley before the rearranged return match against Keynsham in 2 weeks time.
