The win was based on a dominant performance from the Avon pack led heroically by skipper Kane Book on his return from injury but was limited by the constant rain and greasy conditions. This made handling the slippery ball a treacherous approach in the swirling wind.
Avon dominated the opening quarter before taking the lead as good line out possession from Rhys van den Handel set up a powerful drive to allow Xander Hall-Davis to force his way over the try line. Rob Fitch converted.
Oldfield struck back as George Maxwell was first to react to a blindside grubber kick to touch down in the corner.
For the rest of the half, the two teams and the weather largely cancelled each other out as the game settled down into a mid-pitch stalemate. The autumn gloom was suddenly broken as Dan Cousineau seized upon a loose pass on halfway and outsprinted the desperate defence to score under the posts. Fitch again added the extras for a 14-5 lead at the interval.
In the second half, Avon dominated possession and territory but found it difficult to turn their superiority into points through a mixture of wrong tactical options and handling errors. Tom Boreham stood out with several dangerous midfield bursts and Jack Moore always posed an attacking threat, whilst Hall-Davis and Cousineau made several threatening charges deep into the visitors defence.
Eventually the pressure told and after Oldfield were forced into conceding several successive penalties, Avon added their third try with a massive scrum surge for Cousineau to collect the pushover try. Fitch slotted the conversion to finalise the scoring.
Oldfield attempted a late comeback with a few rare excursions into the home 22 but excellent Avon defence repelled any potential scoring chances. Next Saturday, Avon host Castle Cary at Hicks Field.
