Although still missing a raft of key players, their performance was much improved, yet they regretted missing at least three clear try scoring opportunities in the first half. Meanwhile Burnham were ruthless in exploiting their chances at the other end.
It was the hosts who opened the scoring with an early penalty but, for most of the first half, Avon dominated possession and territory but were unable to translate this into points. Twice they were held up over the line as Iain Parris, then Will Hayward, were unable to ground the ball to the referee's satisfaction. Then a try from Matt Thresher was disallowed due to a declared forward pass.
Burnham survived these scares and as they launched a rare attack, they scored a good try as their centre cut a good line against the grain to power over the try line. Again Avon camped around the home 22 but a mixture of handling errors and committed defence held them out.
As half time approached, Burnham once again escaped the shackles to get behind the Avon defence and score a vital breakaway try under the posts to post a 15 nil lead at the interval.
With Will Hayward making an impressive first start after a two-year injury layoff and Dan Cousineau constantly making inroads with his powerful runs, Avon soon worked the position down field again to open their account. After several short-range attacks, clean line out ball from Rhys van den Handel set the platform for a powerful drive across the line by Ben Hurd for his 4th try of the season. Thresher slotted the conversion.
Yet again, Avon's nemesis struck as they were unable to deal with a wickedly bouncing ball from a speculative kick and chase, allowing Burnham to score another converted try under the posts to extend their lead. Avon responded as quickly recycled ball was swiftly transferred wide to Parris who dived for the try line in the corner, only to be halted by a high tackle. This gave the referee no option but to award a penalty try and sin bin the offender.
With Burnham seeking their bonus point try, they were only denied by last ditch tackles from Stu Dilloway and Cousineau before they eventually worked an overlap to eventually score out wide. With the clock in the red, Avon showed admirable spirit after several forward drives were held up to finally secure a bonus point as Xander Hall-Davis powered over the try line. Thresher again added the extras.
In his first outing as 1st team captain, Ben Hurd achieved the unusual accolade from coach Kai Harwood in awarding the stand-in number 3 the Man-of-the-Match award as regular prop and club captain Kane Book was forced to watch from the sidelines during his recovery from sciatica.
