Feast of Rugby at Hicks Field

Steve Bird2 Mar - 12:55

Avon clocked up their biggest win of the season as they comprehensively demolished Wells by 72 points to nil

This result sees Avon maintain their 3rd position in Counties 2 Somerset ahead of next week’s tough trip to 2nd place Clevedon. Meanwhile Wells remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

A beautiful spring day saw ideal conditions for rugby and for the first quarter things were fairly even in a fast and frenetic opening. Avon had taken a very early lead with a Dan Cousineau try up the blind side and for the next 15 minutes Wells remained in contention. Their attacks were however repelled by some outstanding Avon defence with double or even triple tackles closing down their opportunities.

As Avon increasingly got on top, they doubled their lead as a midfield move from clean line out possession resulted in Will Bartholomew crashing over near the posts. Then a powerful line out drive on the other side of the pitch saw Xander Hall-Davis crash over the try line. Close to half time, Avon scored their bonus point try as they turned over Wells possession in the tackle and swiftly moved the ball along the back line for Iain Parris to surge up the touch line for the try. Rob Fitch slotted all 4 conversions for a healthy 28-0 lead at the break.

The next quarter after the break saw Avon cut loose with a scintillating spell with another 5 tries in a purple patch of scoring. A dangerous break from Jake Coates was halted close to the line, only for the supporting Parris to pick up an dot down his second try. Another mazy run from Parris led to the position for Oscar McCormack to kick ahead and regather before scoring the next try.

A powerful scrum surge then created a pushover try for Cousineau before another solid scrum allowed Fitch to sell a sublime dummy to break up field to release Coates on a run to the try line. Perhaps the best team try of the match followed as clever inter-passing between Hall-Davis, Ben May and Kiddie Sheikh saw soft hands and subtle changes of direction before McCormack emerged on a great supporting run to add his second try.

Although enjoying a massive 55-0 lead, Avon maintained their focus and intensity to add another 3 tries and 2 more conversions. Hall-Davis barged over for his second try from another clean line out possession. Then Parris completed his hat-trick in a man-of-the-match performance with a mazy 60 metre run past 4 attempted tacklers to score with aplomb under the posts. Finally a Tom Boreham burst up the middle was stopped just short, allowing the recycled ball to be switched to the blind side for Jack Moore to touch down in the corner.

The Avon “elite” 2nd team entertained Guildford Vets who were on a tour to Bath and a lovely game ensued, played in a wonderful spirit of typical rugby camaraderie. In a flowing end to end match, the Elite squad eventually triumphed by 21-14 before the celebrations continued in a crowded clubhouse. Avon’s tries were scored by Ben Crane, Chaz Meddick and Mark Kelly whilst Guildford responded with two tries themselves in a match where rugby was the winner. Ben Hurd didn't score!
