This result moves Oldfield up to third place in Counties 2 Somerset, whilst Avon remain in sixth after a strangely subdued and lacklustre display, littered with errors.
Within the first 5 minutes, Avon were guilty of not clearing their lines inside their own 22 after a cleanly taken line out and forward drive. Oldfield capitalised on the charged down kick and moved the ball through midfield where elusive centre Lucas Pichot cut through for the opening try.
Pinned back deep inside their own half by committed tackling from the visitors with Zak Kennedy and player/coach Ollie Hayes to the fore, Avon struggle to break free as a catalogue of knock-ons and turnovers prevented any fluidity in their attacking attempts. A series of penalties conceded at the breakdowns also allowed Oldfield to maintain their momentum. It was no surprise when they increased their lead as Pichot added his second try after a mazy run through the middle. Alex Chapman added the conversion.
An Ian Burnell burst gave Avon a platform to respond but they were limited to a single penalty from Jonny Batchelor, leaving a half time deficit of 12-3.
Multiple penalties allowed Oldfield to build field position and Chapman soon slotted another successful kick to extend their lead. Although Avon started to put together a few more cohesive movements, handling errors again let them down and a kick and chase from the visitors led to a goal line drop out by the home side. Unfortunately this was fielded by the dangerous Pichot who sidestepped and swerved through a bemused defence to touch down his hat-trick try.
The conversion and another penalty saw the visitors open a commanding lead but with 10 minutes left Avon started to show what perhaps could have been as they cranked up the pressure with some powerful drives inside their opponents 22. Josh Hiscott was rewarded by touching down Avon’s first try, converted by Batchelor. Any hopes of a last ditch comeback were thwarted though as Oldfield scored their bonus point try through winger Jaime Berghaz.
Once again, Avon demonstrated some spirit as hooker Liam Ridley finished off another concerted line out drive to score his first try for the club but it proved too little too late.
Next week Avon travel to take on St Bernadettes whilst Oldfield host Tor.
