Taunton’s speedy young backs proved a constant threat as they sought to move the ball wide at every opportunity, resulting in 4 well taken tries.
With Avon missing 4 of their regular three quarters, it was no surprise that they focussed on the strength of their pack, with a tremendous performance in the set scrums during the first half. This dominance allowed Avon to take an early lead with 2 penalties from full back Jonny Batchelor, who also added a third just before half time.
Unfortunately shortly after the interval, Taunton lost their starting prop and, with no suitably qualified replacement, the referee moved to uncontested scrums for safety purposes. This nullified Avon’s biggest asset as they lost their advantage up front and allowed Taunton to exploit their pace and wide-ranging game.
Avon did score an excellent consolation try after young prop Oscar McCormack burst through midfield to suck in the defence before spinning a 20 metre pass to Batchelor who cruised over the try line for a 16 point personal haul.
Rhys van den Handel’s all-action performance was rewarded with the man-of-the-match bubbly and medal, sponsored by regular Avon supporter Jos Davies who made the 100 mile round trip to support the team.
