Their opponents were 2 leagues higher, playing at level 6 in the RFU pyramid within the Regional 2 Severn league. This showed particularly in the opening quarter where the visitors powerful forwards and dangerous backs dominated possession and exposed Avon’s defence with three quick fire tries to open up a healthy lead.
As Avon settled into the game, they responded to the challenge and started to pose threats themselves. A midfield burst from Xander Davis sucked in the defence and quick hands from the backs moved the ball wide for winger Iain Parris to score in the corner. Then Parris fielded a kick on halfway and weaved across field before transferring to opposite winger Tai Harwood who showed great strength and agility to add Avon’s second try. This led to a 10 – 15 score line at half time.
For long periods of the second half, Avon showed great tenacity to stifle the powerful Trowbridge attacks but eventually they conceded three more tries as the pressure told. Their cause wasn’t helped as they got on the wrong side of some refereeing decisions and suffered four yellow cards during the match, effectively playing one man short for half the game. Worryingly, they also picked up a few injuries and are hoping that these don’t prove to be too serious.
However not to be outdone, Avon again responded in style after Escher le Duc threatened in the centre before man-of-the-match Zak Harwood capped an outstanding display to touch down their third try. This resulted in a final margin of 15 – 36 which augurs well for their forthcoming league season.
