Ray played for Avon during the 1970s and 1980s as an athletic 2nd row forward. He was an imposing presence in the line out and galloping forward ball in hand. A lovely character off the field, Ray could be a gentle giant on the pitch but woe betide anybody who mistreated his brothers Ivor or Mike during a match when Ray took on the "enforcer" role!

Ray used to enjoy watching Avon when he could and loved meeting up with old friends at the Old Players reunions with his engaging personality and ready laughter.

He always kept active after retiring from rugby with his long walks and playing tennis until physical and mental impairments reduced his capabilities. After gradually suffering more, Ray eventually slipped away on 4th March 2026.
