Avon RFC History - The 1940s

The first part of the decade was overshadowed by the 2nd World War in which several Avon players made the ultimate sacrifice

After the Second World War, Avon RFC reformed with a single team in 1946 under the captaincy of C R West with the Secretary being F T Kershaw. The Club now played at the ‘Horse Show Ground’ and members congregated at the Francis Hotel in Queen Square. This reconstituted season proved to be one of the best-ever in Avon’s history, with only 2 matches lost all year – and both of these being to Bath United.

Avon moved grounds again in 1948 to the “Monument Field” near Rainbow Wood at Combe Down, with the team changing at the Mason’s Arms. In 1949 a club building was purchased and erected at a cost of £330 at the Rockery Tea Gardens in Combe Down and, in the same season, the 2nd team was resurrected.
