Avon RFC - the 1920s

Steve Bird18 Sep - 18:26

A decade with USA alcohol prohibition, discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb; invention of talking movies; first winter Olympics; and formation of Avon RFC

Avon rugby club was formed in 1925 by members of the Avon Rowing Club who wanted to do some other exercise outside their rowing season to keep fit and to keep together during the winter months. They also hoped to recruit new members for the Rowing Club from amongst the newly formed rugby club. The founder members of the rugby club included Preston Jones, Don Tate, Laurie Fraser, J Pitt (Captain), F Balding (Secretary), Rudy Meyer (Treasurer) and S V Rolleston (President).

Avon RFC first played at Odd Down, opposite the old “Burnt House” public house, whose skittles alley became our first set of changing rooms. The Club colours were stated to be Black and Amber and Avon have retained these colours to the present day (although the youngsters find it simpler to say “black and yellow” - much to the chagrin of the old traditionalists in the club!)

The Club enjoyed an excellent first season in playing terms, with a final record reading: Played 26, Won 17, Drawn 2, Lost 7, Points For 247, Points Against 123. One of the strongest opponents in these early years was Bath Rugby’s second team, then known as Bath “A” but now called Bath United.

After such a good first season, the Club’s fixture list was strengthened and, as a result, the next few years playing records were not so outstanding. However, Avon’s reputation was well founded in those early seasons and substantiated through the years that followed – and is still being maintained today.
