Another Match Succumbs to the Weather

Avon's scheduled game away to Clevedon was postponed due to their opponents waterlogged pitch - now rearranged for 14th March

That is now an unprecedented 6 cancellations already this season. Avon are doing all they can to prepare a suitable pitch for Saturday’s home fixture against Imperial but remain at the mercy of the elements.

Some free Saturdays have been created through a sad situation as the Rebels rugby club from Taunton have had to disband. A statement from the Rebels Chairman read:

“It is with regret that we inform you that due to an ongoing shortage of players and despite our best efforts to recruit and sustain participation, the Rebels will be forfeiting the remaining games this season. This decision has not been made lightly. The club has been built on commitment, teamwork and camaraderie. However, this season we find ourselves plagued with injury, and, with the unfortunate situation with the lack of continuity of games, our numbers have dwindled and it is no longer possible to continue competitively this season. We intend to reconvene again in the summer of 2026 and assume that, if we have a viable club, we will be entered in the bottom league once more”

An Avon spokesman said “It’s always a sad situation when a rugby club folds but this shows the challenges that many clubs are now facing. Avon RFC wish them well in their attempts to resurrect next season and look forward to future fixtures.”
