Sorry to learn Malcolm has recently passed away. His funeral is at Haycombe on Friday 15th March at 16:00. Our condolences to his family & friends.

Unfortunately, I seem to have been the conveyor of sad news recently and now have to let you know that Malcolm Dines has passed away. His son Harvey has contacted the club and asked if we can pass on the sad news to anybody who remembers Malcolm. He has also said that any old colleagues are more than welcome to come along to his funeral which is being held at Haycombe crematorium at 16:00 on Friday 15th March and/or to the wake which will follow at 16:45 at the Bath Mill just down the hill.

Malcolm was an staunch prop forward mainly for the 2nd team through the 1970s and was part of the “Famous Five” at the heart of the pack featuring Malcolm and Fred Kyte at prop with Billy Tavener hooking whilst Tony and Mick Houlihan were the 2nd row engine room. Malcolm was one of the Gas Board contingent that supplied so many players to Avon over the years.

But it was perhaps off the field that his presence was most keenly felt at Avon with his fundraising and social activities. In 1971, Malcolm organised the “Dines Doddle” to help raise funds for the purchase of our own ground. This was a sponsored run for club members along the canal towpath to Bradford on Avon and back which raised £700 towards the ground fund. Although this may not sound much today, if you apply inflation rates, then this sum equates to almost £10,000 at current prices.

In 1972, Malcolm was awarded the Clubman of the Year trophy. Alongside Fred Kyte, he also donated the Dines & Kyte Cup which is now awarded for the Players’ Player of the Year. This trophy has been awarded every year since 1974 and remains a great honour to the nominated player.

On behalf of the Club, our condolences to his wife, family and friends.
