Avon completed their league campaign as they started it back in September, with a resounding victory over city neighbours Stotherts by 43-0.

This result cemented 5th place in Western Counties North, ensuring Avon's highest ever league finish in their 89 year history.

A minute's silence was held before the match as a mark of respect from the players and sizeable crowd for Stotherts stalwart Bill Derrick.

With the fierce wind at their backs, Avon exerted early pressure from a line out drive up the right touchline before spreading the ball wide along their backs to the left. Although the move stalled with a strong Stotherts tackle, man of the match Kane Book (playing as a makeshift lock) stripped the ball from the defence and scampered free to touch down the opening try near the posts. Rob Fitch added the extras.

Shortly afterwards, Avon increased their lead as Stotherts attempted to run the ball out of their 22 but turned over possession for prop Chris Mutlow to sell an unlikely dummy before racing clear for the second try. From the restart, Stotherts came close to scoring as they charged down a relieving kick and attacked close to the try line but were denied by Avon's excellent scramble defence.

Avon continued to launch threatening attacks, particularly with dangerous handling moves from clean off-the-top line out ball from Scott Book but were often undone by the last pass in blustery conditions. Then Damien Sawyer launched an audacious break from deep in defence which was carried on by the supporting Ollie Flight before Mutlow appeared out wide for his second try in the corner, although a video ref may well have disputed the grounding of the ball.

With a commanding 17 nil half time lead, Avon showed their intentions playing into the wind after the restart with a flowing handling move involving half their team before Fitch sliced through the despairing defence for the bonus point try at the posts which he duly converted.

Stotherts understandably started to fire huge relieving kicks downfield but this played into the hands of young Avon full back James Leeming whose pace launched a series of counter attacks. From one such foray, Avon were held out by determined Stotherts defence before switching the ball wide where Jake Dixon popped up in midfield to power across the try line.

Fitch again slotted the easy conversion, then put the finishing touches on the try of the match as Avon attacked from close to their own line, supporting and recycling the ball before Fitch dummied through to touch down another converted try, which brought up his 200 points for the season.

Although well beaten, Stotherts showed their spirit with their best spell of the match but were let down through a mixture of their own handling mistakes and Avon's impressive defence and were reduced to a long range drop goal attempt to get some points on the board. The final word again came from Avon with another sweeping move triggered by Flight and Harwood before Damien Sawyer clinched an emphatic win their 7th try of the match.

Avon's annual dinner and awards ceremony is being held on Friday 1st May, with tickets available from Heather Sutherland.
