Avon Crash to Heavy Defeat

A depleted Avon side suffered their heaviest defeat for several years as Coney Hill produced an outstanding display of attacking rugby to ......

.......cement their position at the top of the league.

With 4 influential members of their pack missing, Avon struggled for quality possession and were undone by the high tempo play of their hosts as they added width and pace to their attacks.

Whilst Avon didn't play poorly, they eventually ran out of tacklers as Coney Hill scored two early tries on the right wing before Avon enjoyed their best spell with a series of forward drives deep inside the home 22. After 3 successive scrums on the line, they were eventually rewarded as Ollie Flight exploited a gap on the blindside to squeeze over for a try in the corner.

Then on the stroke of half time as Avon stood still expecting a not straight decision from an attacking lineout, Coney Hill produced a text book peel to waltz over for another converted try to open up a 19-5 interval lead.

For the next 20 minutes Avon performed admirably, led well by Chaz Meddick up front and with both Kane Book and Chris Mutlow making powerful breaks before running out of support. Solid tackling and committed defence epitomised by Ian Burnell, Chris and Damien Sawyer prevented Coney Hill from adding to their score for the next quarter. Avon also showed signs of attacking flair as James Leeming and Nick Tribe both made promising runs before the attacks petered out.

But when hooker Ben Hurd was yellow carded for illegally slowing down the ball at a breakdown, Coney Hill took full advantage of the extra man with some sweeping attacks through the tiring defence to run in 4 more spectacular tries as the floodgates opened to rack up a comprehensive 45 points to 5 win.

Next week Avon host near neighbours Keynsham at Hicks Field.
