Avon completed their campaign by picking up a 4 try losing bonus point in this 51-24 defeat against 2nd placed Matson. This result moves Avon into 6th position in Western Counties North, their highest-ever league position in their 89 year history.

Missing 5 regulars and further disrupted by an early injury to Chris Sawyer, Avon produced a somewhat subdued display in the first 60 minutes which Matson exploited to the full as their speedy back line ran in 3 tries down the slope inside the first half. Meanwhile, Avon's attacks were sporadic and although Kai Harwood, Jake Dixon, Chris Sawyer and Kane Book threatened individually up front, these moves broke down too regularly and allowed Matson to clear their lines.

When Matson scored another 2 tries early in the second half for a 32 point lead, Avon were staring down the barrel but dug deep into their reserves of commitment and energy to finally string together some cohesive rugby. Skipper Kai Harwood led the way with his 13th try of the season to finish top of the try-scoring charts which seemed to inspire his troops.

Featuring 4 sets of brothers and 2 cousins, Avon's family team spirit shone through as Zak Harwood was next to touch down after an improvised punch-pass from Bob Fitch. Then after having grafted all season without troubling the scorers, the effervescent Scott Book eventually scored his maiden try after great support work near the posts.

With Fitch adding 2 conversions to bring his season total to 222 points, Avon were suddenly posing problems but Matson responded with another 2 long range tries on the counter attack through their dangerous runners. After Ross Cameron was denied a score through a desperate cover tackle, the try fest continued as Damien Sawyer weaved his way to the posts where swiftly recycled ball was switch to the blindside for Jake Dixon to crash over for the bonus point try.

With substitutes Sam Book and Aaron Sawyer making their seasonal debuts as the game moved into its final stages, Matson fittingly had the last word as they ran in the final try from deep inside their own half.

Meanwhile Avon 2nds were awarded their final game by default and so finished a creditable campaign in 3rd place in Somerset 3 North.

Avon's Annual Club Dinner is on Friday 2nd May and tickets must be bought from Heather Sutherland by Easter.
