Avon completed the double over Midsomer Norton with an 18-10 away win to retain 5th place in Western Counties North.

They made a perfect start with a converted try inside the first 5 minutes but, in retrospect, perhaps that early score allowed their concentration to waiver as they failed to capitalise during the rest of the first half with the wind and slope in their favour.

A well rehearsed lineout catch and drive set up good possession inside the home 22 and, 4 powerful forward surges later, predatory hooker Ben Hurd swooped for the try. Rob Fitch converted and slotted a penalty later to open up a 10 point lead.

Despite enjoying the lions share of possession and territory, some wayward passing and poor attacking options in the face of determined Norton defence, restricted any further Avon scoring. Meanwhile Norton were always dangerous on the break, particularly from their skillful centre, and reduced the deficit to 10-3 at half time with a penalty following a high tackle in front of the posts.

Immediately from the restart after the interval, Avon scored their second try. A wicked bounce kindly stood up for 2nd row Ben Dilloway to sprint clear from 50 metres for a try in the corner.

Playing into the wind, Avon started to put together a few phases but turnovers and lengthy relieving kicks allowed the hosts to drive play deep downfield. One certain try from a breakout by their powerful left wing was only halted by a magnificent tackle from Stu Dilloway.

Then, as Avon were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card, Norton upped the pressure on the visitors line and were eventually rewarded with a converted try to narrow the gap to 15-10 with 5 anxious minutes left to play.

Good Avon defence prevented any further scores and, as they worked the ball back upfield, Norton were penalised at the scrum and Fitch nailed a difficult penalty to clinch a hard fought win and deny the hosts a losing bonus point.

Next week, Avon travel to North Bristol for a game rearranged due to the bad weather.
