After a pulsating game, Avon entered injury time with a deserved 10 points to 3 lead against promotion favourites Chew who threw everything into a multi phased attack which eventually resulted in a converted try from dangerous fullback Tom Bryan to level the scores.
With 49 minutes on the clock, Avon once again forced their visitors on the defensive to seek the winning score as Rob Fitch narrowly missed a snap drop goal before being awarded a penalty with the last kick of the game which unfortunately dropped just under the bar.
Earlier, Chew had taken an early lead with a penalty as their high tempo game tested the Avon defence which proved outstanding all afternoon, with Ross Atherton and Zak Harwood excelling in midfield and Ian Burnell and Kane Book leading upfront.
With 2 strikes against the head as the Avon front row started to exert pressure and with stand-in scrum half Damien Sawyer probing from the base, Avon levelled with a Fitch penalty. Although the scores remained locked at 3 apiece for the rest of the half, the momentum of the game swung first one way then the other as both sides played some attractive rugby to break the deadlock.
After the break, Avon launched a counter attack from deep with a powerful surge from second row Jake Dixon before being taken on by partner Ben Dilloway but the resulting penalty was nudged slightly wide of the posts. A lineout steal from Scott Book then led to a ferocious series of drives as Kai Harwood and Chris Mutlow were held up just short of the line before hooker Ben Hurd followed up to score his 10th try of the season.
Fitch added the extras to give Avon a deserved 10-3 lead before both Mutlow and Harwood were forced to leave the field with injuries, allowing replacements Dan Ryan-Lowes and Chris Sawyer to enter the fray. Chew's large but mobile pack and quicksilver backs mounted waves of attacks to protect their winning run but were met with spirited resistance typified by the Avon back three of Stu Dilloway, Ben Crane and Tim Wood as Avon held out until the dramatic injury time finale.
The shared 2 points apiece cements Chew's position in second place with a game in hand on leaders Matson whilst Avon remain comfortably positioned in 5th place before next week's game at Midsomer Norton.
