In the first half, Avon took a long time to get in their stride, seeming slightly flat and unable to find their usual fluency in attack. They were also made to pay for their generosity as they gifted 2 tries to their opponents, the first after a handling movement broke down on halfway and the second when an ambitious pass was intercepted inside their own half.
With 12 points for Bristolians from these two long range tries, Avon had to chase the game and responded with two breaks from Tim Wood and Jake Dixon to force their visitors on the defensive. A quickly taken short penalty from stand in scrum half Damien Sawyer then created the opening for Dixon to power over for a try, converted by a Rob Fitch, to reduce the deficit to 12 - 7 at halftime.
Having withstood a downpour, Avon were still guilty of trying to force the game from too deep after the interval but gradually discovered their momentum as their pack started to drive forwards with their offloading game.
A monumental surge from a 5 metre scrum allowed skipper Kai Harwood to charge over the try line with Fitch adding the extras to take a hard fought lead. Avon extended this further as the ever-alert Sawyer spotted a gap inside the 22 and evaded the desperate defence to aquaplane in for the 3rd try.
Bristolians showed their tenacity from the restart as they recycled the ball wide for a try in the corner to set up an intriguing last 10 minutes. Despite seeking the bonus point try, Avon's attacks were thwarted and they had to settle for a final penalty from Fitch to put the result beyond doubt in a match admirably officiated by referee Roger Gilson.
Next week, Avon entertain local rivals Oldfield at Hicks Field in an eagerly awaited derby match.
