Avon were left reeling from the outset as disorganised defence allowed the hosts to take the lead with an unconverted try in the first two minutes and then conceded another as their number 8 ran in unopposed from a scrum on half way for a converted try under the posts.
To their credit, Avon responded strongly in adversity up the slope and for the remainder of the half competed well by taking the game to their opponents through their close forward offloading game but couldn’t break down a stubborn defence in a series of fast and furious exchanges. Then with half time approaching, Avon again relaxed in defence and Chosen Hill ran in another converted try from half way for a 19 nil lead.
Avon played smarter rugby for the first 10 minutes of the second half to dominate possession and territory and were boosted as Kai Harwood barged across the line for a try converted by younger brother Zak. Rather than using this as a platform to build upon, Avon’s usually well organised defence again let them down as missed tackles cost them a further 3 converted tries and presented Chosen Hill with a welcome bonus point win.
Next week Avon are at home to Berry Hill and will be seeking to halt their slide down the Western Counties table where they now occupy 10th place.
One piece of good news however came through after the match as Avon 2nds earned a creditable win by 29 points to 13 against Chew Valley.
