Injuries and disruption result in another loss
By Steve Bird
Weston Super Mare 2nds ran in 7 tries to avenge their early season defeat by Avon in a 45-21 win.
The Weston back line did most of the damage with an excellent display of accurate distribution and pace that Avon struggled to contain on a wide pitch.
The visitors will be worried about their mounting injury list as 5 more players picked up injuries bad enough to leave the field which meant Avon had to empty their bench before half time. Although poised at 7 each after a converted try from Chaz Meddick, Weston took advantage of Avon's subsequent reorganisation in a purple patch which gave them a try scoring bonus after 30 minutes. Another converted try from Ollie Flight reduced the deficit but left Avon 31-14 down at the interval.
Avon's injury jinx continued within minutes of the restart as second row Xander Davis was forced to leave the field which meant that they had to play the second half with 14 men.
They did well to keep Weston down to just 2 more tries in the second half and managed to score a third themselves through Lucas Pratt who make a good fist of playing in the unfamiliar fly half role. With Jonny Batchelor adding 3 conversions, Avon sought an unlikely try bonus point but Weston closed out the game.
Avon face Nailsea next week and will be hoping for some good news from their growing injury list.
