Avon were pleased to come away from a hard fixture with a win against a well organised Weston side. Playing against the slope and wind in the first half Avon started well and were rewarded after 10 minutes with a Sam Rowlands penalty. This was cancelled out soon after by Weston and although Avon managed to create a number of half chances they were unable to get enough supporting men to the ball carrier in order to convert possession into points and had to settle for another Rowlands penalty to go In at half time 6-3 up. Weston adapted well to the changing conditions in the second half, as the rain came down they converted to a very effective pick and drive game which saw them sustain possession for long periods. This pressure was turned into points when they slotted another penalty in the second Half to bring the scores level. Avon always had the upper hand in the scrummage and gradually started to use the wind to gain territory and after a series of phases scrum half Ollie flight spotted a
Gap behind the Weston defence and chipped over perfectly from the base of a ruck to allow Des Bowden to outpace the defence, pick up the bounce and score in the corner. Weston, who were never going to give up without a fight came back to within 2 points with another penalty before Rowlands extended Avon's lead back to 5 points with another penalty after 70 minutes. Weston battled hard in the final 10 minutes and were only thwarted by a solid defensive performance from Avon who in the end were pleased to hear the final whistle. The final score was 14-9 to Avon who must travel away again next week when they will face Taunton.
