To their credit, they responded strongly and worked their way back to 22-19 before Whitehall finally closed out the win with two late tries.
After initially allowing Whitehall too much space to spread the ball wide, Avon grew into the game as their pack started to secure some possession. A counter attack from Matt Thresher was followed by some swift offloading to allow winger Dan Griffin to touch down in the corner.
Avon followed this with a period of pressure as Will Hayward, Chaz Meddick and Chris Mutlow all combined to force Whitehall on the defensive. Then, after Ollie Flight had gone close from short range, three more powerful scrums eventually resulted in an Avon penalty try. Jonny Batchelor added the extras to close the gap to 3 points at half time.
Whitehall restarted strongly and scythed through the middle for a scintillating try but Avon again bounced back and were rewarded with their 3rd try as young Xander Davis powered over from a short penalty.
With Batchelor converting, Avon had clawed themselves back into contention but they completely failed to deal with the resulting restart to allow Whitehall to add the decisive score. This left Avon chasing the game from deep inside the last 5 minutes and a turnover cost them dearly as Whitehall moved the ball wide for their final try in a 34-19 win.
