With half of the Squad injured and watching on from the touchline everyone knew that this was going to be a big ask against a strong Chew outfit looking to avenge a home defeat earlier in the season. Avon started strongly and with Stuart Dilloway filling in at fly half for the injured Rob Fitch they opted for the direct approach as they kept the ball in hand and attacked at every opportunity. This was rewarded by an early penalty converted by centre Zak Harwood.
Chew hit back within 10 mins when outstanding fullback Tom Bryan danced through to score under the posts. Possession was fairly even although Avon had a slight edge in at scrum time where hooker Ben Hurd managed his customary couple of strikes against the head. Avon however could not turn their pressure into points and in was Chew that kept the scoreboard ticking over as Bryan added two penalties before half time and another soon after.
The home side never lost sight of the prize and with Prop Chaz Meddick coming off the bench for his first game in two months they added another ball carrier to support the work of Kane Book and JJ Pulvertaff and kept up the pressure on Chew.
With just 3 mins to go Avon lunched another attack and following a series of forward drives Hurd forced his way over close to the posts. Harwood added the extras to put Avon in bonus point territory. The game ended soon after with the unusual sight of both teams celebrating as Chew kicked the ball dead to seal the win.
Considering the scale of the injuries Avon has suffered this year the club which has seen as mainly as 7 teenagers in the side in some games can be extremely proud of surviving in a unforgiving environment as Western counties and things are looking good for next season where they will be looking to reap the reward of blooding so many young players this season.
Avon travel to Wellington for the last game of the season next week with the pressure off for the first time this year.
