The windswept conditions and a greasy ball made concerted handling something of a lottery as the game became a stop start affair interspersed with breakdowns, scrummages and lineouts. As each team enjoyed spells of ascendency, it came down to a battle of the two fly halves as they exchanged penalties at regular intervals for an even 9 points each draw at half time.
Joe Davies had given Keynsham an early lead after a darting break from scrum half John Pearce before Rob Fitch then equalised as Avon counter attacked. Another Fitch penalty gave Avon the lead after Keynsham were penalised for some over vigorous play.
As Keynsham's powerful ball carriers in their pack started to make inroads through Corey Talbot and Jack Weston, Davies then levelled the scores before Avon enjoyed their best spell with some inspired forward drives led by Chaz Meddick, Ian Burnell and Kane Book. They were rewarded as a Fitch penalty again gave them the lead, only for Davies to negate this shortly before half time.
Keynsham increased their intensity from the restart and a series of pick and drives created an opening for prop forward Tim Coghlan to crash over for a try out wide. Avon compounded this by conceding a soft penalty five minutes later, which Davies again slotted for a 17-9 lead.
With half an hour left to play, Avon launched a ferocious series of attacks but were repelled by the visitors stout defence. Twice scrum half Ollie Flight took quick tap penalties deep inside the 22 and twice Keynsham players were shown yellow cards for not retreating and tackling him too early. Despite being reduced to 13 men, these streetwise tactics paid off as Keynsham prevented the attempted tries and withstood the onslaught through some committed defence.
With the worsening weather conditions, the last quarter petered out despite the monumental efforts of Avon's man of the match Scott Book as the powerful visiting pack imposed a stranglehold on the game to remain undefeated and challenging for honours at the top of the table. Meanwhile Avon travel to fellow strugglers Gordano next Saturday, desperately seeking a much needed win
