Although dominating three quarters of this match, Avon inexplicably managed to lose by 20 points to 10 against Chosen Hill.

This was especially galling as the Avon pack were dominant for most of the game but were unable to fashion scores when it counted in the atrocious conditions. To make matters worse, Avon also conceded two soft tries which gave their opponents a lifeline to victory.

With 6 regulars still missing through injury, Avon's woes were compounded when fullback Stuart Dilloway limped off with a knee injury after only 5 minutes play. Chosen Hill took the lead soon after with a straightforward penalty.

Avon's pack, with Chas Meddick, Scoot Book and Kane Book to the fore, responded strongly with a surfeit of possession through their forward drives but every time they worked the ball upfield, Chosen were able to force them back with lengthy relieving kicks via the strong wind.

Avon contributed to their own downfall by not adjusting their play tactically to the stormy wet weather conditions. This was epitomised when a driving lineout maul powered 30 metres deep into the visitors' territory but the subsequent attack was intercepted to allow Chosen a breakaway try against the run of play.

To make matters worse, a groggy Ian Burnell was also forced to leave the field at the same time, leaving Avon 10 points adrift despite being in the ascendancy.

Although scrum half Alex Gapper also went off at half time, Avon immediately reduced the deficit as Rob Fitch slotted a monstrous penalty. With the strong wind at their backs and their pack dominant, it seemed only a matter of time before Avon converted their possession into points.

Two attempted scrum pushovers were held up through desperate defence, then Avon strangely opted for an attacking lineout from the resulting penalty instead of another scrum. Although youngster Adam Hichcliffe-Walsh won the front ball, Avon were penalised for a 'truck-and-trailer' detachment with the line begging and the chance was lost.

Midway through the second half, another series of attacking drives, prompted by some close quarter darts from Ollie Flight, put Avon inside the Chosen 22 again. Unfortunately Avon selected the lineout option again from another penalty and, with the wind making the throw a lottery, the visitors were again able to clear their lines.

A rare Chosen attack was then rewarded with a penalty but eventually with 5 minutes remaining, Avon scored the try that their efforts warranted as winger Nick Tribe touched down in the corner against his old club. Rob Fitch converted and at 10-13, with at least a losing bonus point in the bag, Avon still believed the win was achievable.

Disastrously they failed to deal with the restart and a dropped pass gifted Chosen the ball which they immediately capitalised upon to score a converted try to snatch the win. Next week, Avon travel to fellow strugglers Cheltenham seeking a much needed win to get their season back on track.
